Ecology of Mind: Gregory Bateson’s Understandings of the Sacred

1한신대학교

초록

Gregory Bateson (1904-1980), a British anthropologist who was deeply concerned with the close relationship between mind and nature, has a particular relevance to the contemporary debate on religion and science. In his view, our fragmented ideas of living experiences can be reconstructed and integrated, in that those experiences of mind and mind processes represent each living entity’s essence that is dynamic and complex. This article investigates the development of Bateson’s understandings of the sacred and their epistemological implications. It argues that his “ecology of mind” sheds light on the creative and ecological dimension of mind and thus helps to overcome the dualistic understanding of religion and science. Indeed, Bateson’s epistemology of the sacred provides new insights into the current discourse on religion and science. One particular example is his conceptions of consciousness and perception that are closely related to mind and mind processes. How this aspect of his theory illuminates our understandings of religion and the latter’s dialogue with science is the focus of this article.
